Joseph S. Colla, MD is currently Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Emergency Ultrasound at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He is the director of the UIC Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship and has been involved in a research projects using bedside ultrasound to screen for subclinical heart disease in patients with hypertension and projects using ultrasound to screen for acute chest syndrome in patients with sickle cell disease. He is also a member of the Sickle Cell Disease Implementation Consortium (SCDIC) which is a national research and implementation science collaborative funded by the National Heart, Blood, Lung Institute (NHBLI), designed to improve medical care of sickle cell patients. Dr. Colla’s focus in SCDIC is the improving care of sickle cell patients experiencing acute vaso-occlusive episodes in the emergency department. Dr. Colla completed medical school at Case School of Medicine in Cleveland. Dr. Colla finished a four-year emergency medicine residency at the University of Cincinnati then completed a one-year fellowship in emergency ultrasound at Advocate Christ Medical Center.
