This talk is a well-timed, high-level but extremely informative presentation regarding the evaluation and treatment of patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) presenting to the emergency department (ED). Dr. Colla will first review the up-to-date, evidence-based and expert consensus recommendations from the National Heart Blood and Lung Institute (NHBLI) and the American Society of Hematology (ASH) regarding evaluation and treatment of SCD patients in the ED. He will then briefly highlight some of the latest developments and trends with regard to the management of sickle cell disease in the acute care setting. Finally, he will review the efficacy, scope, and in some instances, controversies surrounding recent FDA approved therapies and other experimental therapies for sickle cell disease.
