Resident
MetroHealth/Cleveland Clinic/CWRU
Cleveland, Ohio
Matthew Carvey is a current PGY1 EM resident at MetroHealth/Cleveland Clinic/CWRU. The previous experience he has as a flight and tactical paramedic prior to medicine drives his urge to spread educational resources not traditionally found in the medical school curriculum, aptly named the "Hidden Curriculum". His speaking experience began in 2019 with a presentation on "Acute Stress Management for the Healthcare Provider" at the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) Conference in Roanoke, VA. He carried his passion for education, teaching and mental health into two poster presentations at AAEM19 and AAEM21. As well, AAEM21 offered him the opportunity to be part of the AAEM Critical Care Medicine Sections (CCMS) 2Breve2Dulce Competition, where he presented on the topics of: "The Forgotten Diagnosis Among Intubated TBI Patients", "Curbside Critical Care in Retrieval Medicine" and "KIWI-Ducanto Grip During Bougie-Assisted Intubation". He developed and taught the "Introduction to Critical Care and Anesthesia" course previously at St. George's University with a similar curriculum approach. This was carried out successfully for 2 years until collaboration with the CCMS occurred in 2021, and they successfully graduated the inaugural "AAEM/RSA Introduction to Critical Care and Anesthesia Course" class at AAEM22. He hopes to continue teaching this curriculum for years to come, as his love and passion for education and critical care are what pushes him to create novel curriculums in emergency medicine.
