Have you ever walked into a patient’s room, fully dressed in scrubs and a white coat, and been asked to take out the trash? Have you been misidentified by a colleague as a non-physician staff member, despite working with them daily? Have you been called a slur based on your race, gender identity, or sexual orientation during a shift? These are a few of the commonplace microaggressions that many physicians deal with on a daily basis. In this session, we will discuss examples of how mis-gendering, misidentification, and mistreatment takes form in the emergency department. A review of techniques for addressing these micro-insults, including upstander training, on behalf of yourself and your colleagues will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to describe three different types of microaggressions and how they may present in the emergency department.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to list at least three tools to aid them in addressing microaggressions that they may commit, witness, or personally experience.
