Pediatric patients present a particular challenge when they or their families wish to leave the emergency department against the advice of their physicians. While parental autonomy exists, there are circumstances in which the emergency physician clearly cannot in good conscience let a child leave the ED. We will talk about identifying and acting in those circumstances. We will also talk strategies for better caring for children and families who wish to leave Against Medical Advice when the circumstances are less clear cut.
