Suicidal patients are common in the ED. Yet surprisingly, most emergency physicians know only the bare minimum about management.
Did you know how to reduce the risk for a suicidal patient in the ED before discharge? Do you know what a safety plan is, how this differs from contracts for safety, and which of these will hold up in court? If you ask your patient about guns, and they say "yes," what do you ask next?
In this session, Dr. Wilson (EM) and Dr. Nordstrom (Psych) will provide practical tips for management of the suicidal patient in the ED. You might still need to call your psychiatrist for help, but at the end of this session, you'll know what to ask for.
Learning Objectives:
Develop an approach for managing the suicidal patient in the ED based on the most current literature.
Distinguish between a safety plan and a contract for safety, and understand which will hold up in court.
Provide management options other than admit or discharge for the suicidal patient in the ED.
