Internalized, interpersonal, and structural racism is of paramount importance for healthcare professionals, given the disproportionate impact on the health of communities of color and from marginalized identities. The Health Equity Simulation is a small group clinic session focused on training participants on cultural competencies related to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). Through a 45-minute low-fidelity simulation case exercise, participants will learn advanced health equity communications skills to effectively address microaggressions and racist attitudes and behaviors in an emergency medicine setting. Participants will have an opportunity to practice advanced health equity communication skills with a standardized patient and receive feedback on improving these skills.
Recognize effective ways of addressing micro- and macroaggressions, bias and racism in the clinical space.
Apply mitigation and communication strategies to address challenging experiences rooted in bias and racism.
Develop upstander responses using literature-based models to challenge biases and racism in clinical scenarios.
