This session will introduce the concept of volunteer physician response to inflight medical emergencies on commercial aviation. We will review the history of inflight emergencies as well as the epidemiology of these events. We will discuss the suggested general approach to inflight emergencies and the expected available resources on the aircraft. A brief discussion of federal legislation in this area of medical care and its legal/medical implications of the volunteer medical provider. We will conclude the session with a review of selected presentations with suggested approach and management.

After this session, the learner will be able to understand the issues involved in the management of inflight medical emergencies.
After this session, the learner will be able to discuss the epidemiology of inflight emergencies as well as the available on-board resources used in the management of inflight medical emergencies.
After this session, the learner will be able to consider his/her involvement in the request for a volunteer physician on board a commercial aircraft.
