Gary Gaddis completed emergency medicine residency in 1989 at the Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio in 1989, at a time when electronic tools to track patients or document about them did not exist. He joined AAEM in its first year, 1993. He has been a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, where he served as the Saint Luke's/Missouri Endowed Chair for Emergency Medicine, and then at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. He has served as the Scientific Chair or Co-Chair for numerous scientific congresses in service to AAEM, and was honored to receive AAEM's Peter Rosen Award in 2012. His research areas include sepsis and clinical processes. He has recently left full-time academic emergency medicine practice to spend more time with his family and hobbies.
