When a newborn's life is literally in your hands, would you know what to do? The next time you precipitously deliver a blue, floppy, neonate, would you know what immediate actions to take? What equipment is necessary? How to optimize ventilation? Obtain access? When to start compressions? When to intubate? Approximately 1-in-10 infants will require some form of resuscitation at the time of delivery, and that number is likely even higher if delivery occurs in the emergency department. But don't fear! This session is designed to tackle these questions by teaching neonatal resuscitation protocol (NRP) from the EM physician perspective in a small-group setting. Emphasis will be placed on ventilation strategies, use of the T-piece resuscitator, and umbilical catheter insertion. In addition, a real-life neontologist will be available for real-time consultation!
Learning Objectives:
identify and confidently use the specialized equipment needed for neonatal resuscitation such as NIPPV, T-piece resuscitator, and umbilical line catheter.
perform neonatal resuscitation protocol (NRP) effectively and efficiently in the ED setting
demonstrate measures to optimize neonatal ventilation utilizing the "MR-SOPA" acronym
