Management of rapid atrial fib can be challenging in undifferentiated ED patients. Several primary conditions such as Gastrointestinal bleeding, sepsis and pulmonary embolism can drive a patient's heart rate up, and treatment with a rate controlling medication or cardioversion may lead to disastrous consequences.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review some real cases treated with a rate controlling medication and their outcomes.
  • Review the diagnostic workup strategy to avoid the pitfalls of rate-controlling a patient who is tachycardic for a reason.
  • Review the literature regarding rate control and cardioversion of rapid atrial fibrillation.
