Sepsis care in the Emergency Department is of critical importance, not merely in terms of delivering excellent care to patients but it is a driver of hospital quality and value based payments. Order set utilization can help improve sepsis care and insure compliance with key metrics.

This session will show how you can leverage clinical informatics and implement a branch logic order set, aimed at addressing specific ED related heuristics can increase utilization of order sets and therefore improve sepsis metrics.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand key sepsis metrics and how they drive overall hospital quality in addition to patient outcomes. Explain the importance of order sets in driving good, metric based care.
  • Explain the basics of usability heuristics and why some order sets fail based on those heuristics.
  • Explain how guided decision making via order sets can help reduce choice burden, and improve overall heuristics. Show the impact that has on order set utilization at one institution.
