Isn’t it great when the learners working on your shift are passionate about emergency medicine, are engaged in the patient care you provide and learning about each encounter? Many EM doctors are not working in academic centers. Certainly, this does not mean they are without learners, just not emergency medicine residents. Many in academic centers will undoubtedly end up with off-service learners. The truth is not everyone shares your passion for emergency medicine. This session will explore some tips and tricks for engaging the difficult learner, the disinterested learner, and making the shift productive for the learner pursuing another field. We will discuss strategies for engaging these learners and providing feedback that will be helpful for whatever field they may end up pursuing.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss developing specific learner-oriented goals for non-emergency medicine bound learners
Develop an approach to providing constructive feedback to learners on shift
Summarize practical tips for engaging multiple learners of varying levels of interest in emergency medicine
