Many transgender patients avoid necessary and emergency health care because of fear of harrassment or discrimination. This talk will describe the various reasons why transgender patients avoid the emergency department. Gaps in care for transgender patients at the institutional and staff levels will be discussed. After this session, participants will be able to develop an approach to caring for transgender patients so that they are more comfortable seeking care in the emergency department.

Describe the reasons why transgender patients are fearful of the healthcare system and emergency departments
Develop and approach to caring for transgender patients in the emergency department to make these patients feel more comfortable in the emergency department.
