The session will review the biochemistry and a better understanding of the endocannabinoid system when activated by cannabis consumption. This will then lead into discussing the drugs patients typically use/are given in the Emergency Department and how the patient's cannabis consumption might affect dosing/metabolism. I will finish the lecture on how EM providers can make their patients feel comfortable in discussing their cannabis use free of stigmatization to avoid future medication interactions.
Learning Objectives:
Better understand how cannabis interacts on our patient's endocannabinoid system and what physiologic affects manifest from cannabis consumption
Determine which medications prescribed/given in the ED might interact with a patient's cannabis consumption and how to dose medications differently (i.e. propofol, warfarin, seizure meds...)
Talk with their patients free a stigmatization to allow patients to be fully honest in their consumption habits.
