As a byproduct of COVID-19, we in emergency medicine are all now experts in treating waves of patients, with limited resources, under sustained stress. We understand the physical, mental, and emotional impact of operating under “crisis conditions” for months and years. Consider the looming projections for climate change: extreme weather events, vector-borne diseases, drought, famine, and population migration—and consider which specialty will be expected to step-up to handle the health implications. You can have a leading role in how humanity rises to meet one of the greatest existential threats we have ever faced […yet again]. This session will explore the impacts of a changing climate on our practice, as well as how we can adapt and evolve our practice to meet these challenges.
Learning Objectives:
List potential impacts of climate change on the practice of emergency medicine.
Develop practices to address local climate impacts during your shift.
Identify actionable steps to help the health care sector "go green".
